Lightcamp class with Randy Kerr in austin, texas

I went to visit a legend in Austin for a class on capturing the light with Randy Kerr. He’s the author of the Westway method for using a sound-method for capturing natural light in photography.  He just came out with the DVD, and it’s great to watch and learn.  You can purchase it at Precision Camera, too.  The lightcamp class was great and it’s always a good refresher to hear about the basics, and not to rely on the camera or photoshop, but to rely on the environment to provide the light.

I took this class over at my local favorite camera store, Precision Camera.  It case you ever need a sales guy who’s awesome and will sell you what you need, and not what you want, ask for Robert.  He’s an AWESOME guy to work with.

Anyway, enough plugging.  After the class, I hung around because I saw a storm coming and took a risk and tried to capture some lightning shots WITHOUT getting electrocuted.  Anyway, here’s some of the stuff I captured while just messing around.  Thanks to Randy Kerr for the inspiration about photographing clouds and for how to properly meter for  for clouds (I knew how to do this, but he gave a simple reminder).

There was also a nice sunset that I captured as we ended the class and walked back to our cars.

I also captured Randy  ‘striking the pose’ AKA ‘Vogue’.   Randy showed us how to use a scrim.  I do this often for my bridal sessions.  Sherrie Hammonds, another local wedding photographer, is the lovely model.

Also, these images underwent NO photoshop retouching – only sharpening for the web.

Nice pics, Michael! You should see if Precision wants to use that lightening pic for their advertising – hot stuff. :) Oh, and I like the look of the new blog! Bigger is definitely better!
